NEWS FROM THE DOGHOUSE

Bulldog Volleyball Opens Season Against Benjamin

The Varsity Volleyball team made its way up to the Benjamin school to open the 2010 season.  The nerves were evident  as the Lady Bulldogs got out to a slow start.  After tying the score at 4-4, the Lady Buccaneers of Benjamin rattled off a string of points to take the first game 25-6.  The Lady Bulldogs tried to bounce back, but only managed 7 and 10 points in the next two games.  There were several long, hard-fought rallies, but Berean came up on the short end losing the match in 3 straight games.

The Junior Varsity match started on a similar note, dropping the first game 25-8, but raised their level of play and aggression.  With just a few points left, the Lady Bulldogs battled back into contention.  They ended up losing the second game 25-22.  Though it was a loss, they left the court on a positive note and are eager for their next match.

BOYS VARSITY FOOTBALL

In their first game of 2010, the Bulldogs took a bit of a roadtrip to face Sebastian River High, a 4A school about two hours north on the Turnpike.  Prior to gametime, the fifty man roster of Sharks was quite a sight to take in, but the Bulldogs put up an early fight.  After giving up a touchdown on an early fumble, Keion Berry returned the ensuing kickoff to tie the game, but that would be the last time the Bulldogs would reach paydirt.  With eighty percent of the team playing both ways (both offense and defense), the fresh legs and sheer numbers were too much for Berean to battle.  The first-game jitters did not help matters as the Sebastian Sharks went into the locker room at half-time up over twenty points.  The second half turned out to be much of the same.  The boys battled hard, but could not muster enough energy to mount an attack.  The game ended 50-6 in favor of the home team.

The dogs may have been knock down, but they are not out as they seek redemption this week in their home opener against Okeechobee High School.  This year, all Bulldog home games will be played at Wellington High School, which is a great improvement for the football program.  Come out this Friday, wear your orange and blue, and support our Bulldogs as they look to capture their first win of the year.

On Monday, August 9, the athletic meeting for parents and sports physicals took place in the Kennel.  Once again, our student-athletes filled the gym to get their FHSAA requirements met in a single night.  Dr. Papa, owner of the Physical Therapy Institute of South Florida, provided a doctor from his practice to provide a tremendous service to our bulldog family.  The night could not have gone as it did without the service of several people who donated their time.  I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank Laurie Reese, Tammy Fernandez, Walter Smith, Mrs. Fyke, and Nurse Green for their contributions to the event.  It is because of the people like those mentioned above that makes Berean Christian School so great.  The night was one of my first opportunities to see the Bulldog family altogether.  Based on what I saw, I am truly excited to be a bulldog.  Just remember, let's keep Christ first and involved in every sports event that BCS participates in.

SECONDARY SPORTS

Fall sports are underway.  Tuesday afternoon, Cheerleading, Football and Volleyball practices got into full swing.  If you are still interested in participating in one of those sports, please make sure you speak with the coaches.  The football and cheerleading teams will be practicing today (Wednesday) while volleyball tryouts will resume Thursday.  The starting dates and times for the rest of the fall sports seasons are as follows.

Cross Country (Jr. High and High School) - Head Coach: Kenneth Jarriel
First Practice ? Monday, August 16, 2010 at Okeeheelee Park.  A bus will leave from campus after school and return just after 6:00 PM.

Junior High Soccer - Head Coach: Richard Miller
First Practice is Monday, August 16, 2010 at Seminole Palms Park.  A bus will leave after school and return around 5:30.

As I mentioned in the meeting, we have moved to a digital schedule.  Almost all the schedules for team sports have been posted for the fall and winter sports.  Individual sports schedules will be posted after the district meetings, which will take place in just a week or two.  Practice schedules for many of the sports have also been posted.

ELEMENTARY SPORTS
http://www.bcsbulldogs.org/athletics/INTRAMURAL.cfm

Information on our Intramural program for elementary students is available on the athletic website under the elementary athletics link.  Registration for T-ball, Coach Pitch, and Kid Pitch sports is currently open.  Please sign up as soon as possible so we can plan appropriately for the upcoming season.  The first practice for those sports is scheduled for August 25, which is right around the corner.  There are several opportunities for parents to volunteer and be a part of the program.  If you are interested, please note that on your child's registration form.

BOOSTERS

Lastly, I hope to have the boosters webpage launched this weekend.  You will be able to order your booster membership and streamline the process all from the web.  Once you have registered, you can submit your payment and pick up your membership materials at all home games once they are ready.  Additionally, lettermen's jackets are going on sale.  Order forms will be available on-line or on the bulletin board outside the athletic office.  You can drop those order forms and payment in the lock box outside the athletic office.  The jackets start at $130.  I have also ordered a dozen hooded sweatshirts, which will be sold on a first-come, first-serve basis.  I will place additional orders as needed.  They will cost $40.  Again, order forms will be available on-line under the booster's link or your child can get an order form off the athletics bulletin board in the gym.

INTRODUCTION FROM THE NEW BULLDOG ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, KEITH HUISMAN!

Greetings! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the Berean Christian School community. My name is Keith Huisman and I am blessed to have been named the new athletic director for the 2010-11 school year. With eight years experience in Broward County as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and dean of students, I hope to bring a new perspective to the BCS program. I consider my appointment to be a true answer to prayer. I have been incredibly impressed with the staff of both Berean Christian School and Grace Fellowship, and I look forward to meeting the rest of my new Bulldog Family.

I assumed the athletic responsibilities on July 6, 2010, and am working hard to prepare for the upcoming athletic seasons. Among the many requirements of the position, I am looking to further utilize the internet and technology to improve communication with parents and the surrounding communities, develop a full-scale booster program, and begin setting a long-range plan for Bulldog Athletics.

Coach E and those before him did a fantastic job laying the foundation and injecting a massive dose of Bulldog Pride into this program. I see it in each athlete, parent, and faculty member I meet. With that attitude in place, I look forward to bringing a new set of talents that can elevate the program to another level.

My wife, Adrienne, and I currently live in Boca Raton with our sixteen month old daughter, Charleigh. We are expecting our second child in February of 2011, so we covet your prayers as our family heads in a new direction here at BCS.

Please check back to this website periodically as new announcements and documentation will be posted as it becomes available.
Thank you so much for the warm welcome and the opportunity to serve.

In Christ,

Keith Huisman
